Catching Up

Hello everyone, I'm back!
I apologize for my disappearance. So, let's talk green card!
As you can imagine, everything went fine with my TEMPORARY GREEN CARD. I was able to fly to Brazil with my husband for the fist time in November 2011 to visit my family and it was great!
A couple of things... Now you will be entering the USA through the CITIZENS/PERMANENT RESIDENTS line, no more of that TOURIST BS and no more 5 hours waiting in line.
It's absolutely unbelievable the difference of treatment I receive wherever I go now. You will definitely enjoy it!
DO NOT FORGET, now you have to get all of your documents in check. If you already have them, you need to update and if not, you have to get them. Both locations I went for my DL and SS in Manhattan were: Drivers License ("License Express" @ 145W 30th St, New York NY (212) 645-5550) and Social Security (26 Federal Plz # 34, New York, NY (212) 264-4036).
Other than that, you will be pretty good for the next 2 years so, go get yourself a great job and don't forget to apply for your GREEN CARD. You MUST file a petition to REMOVE THE CONDITIONS OF RESIDENCE up to 90 DAYS before your GREEN CARD expires or you will lose it and there's NO WAY to get it back!

PS: On my next post I will explain the process for the Green Card Extension.

Green Card Interview

Our green card interview finally happened!!!

We received the letter with our schedule for the interview in august (around the 12th), right after we also received a letter from our lawyer reminding us of the appointment.
Let's talk about the BIG day... We got there (our green card interview was in Newark NJ) on September 13th 2011 at 11am sharp and our lawyer was already there. We talked a little bit about our past weekend and the night before in case we had any questions on that. The officer called our name around 12:30pm (be ready for a long wait) and our lawyer followed us to a tiny cubicle. After we were inside the immigration office had us swear we would speak nothing but the truth and right after we sat down to start the interview.
The officer looked at my husband and asked him what name I was using at this moment and heard his answer. His following questions to him were: let me see your paperwork? What's your wife's complete address? Have your wife been married before? Does she have any children from previous relationship? Where are your pictures? (Which by the way he kept one for the files) and last but not least: How and when did you two meet?
The following round of questions were for myself, he asked: What about your husband, has he ever been married? Does he have children from any previous relationship? And he also asked me all the security questions such as: Are you a terrorist? Have you ever received any military training? Have you ever been arrested?...
After that he looked at my husband, close the paperwork files and said: "Here your immigration interview ends. You can go to the waiting room, I'll make my decision and I will call you to the window."
5 minutes after we were waiting, he called us to the window and said: 'I'll keep your work permit and you should receive your green card in the mail in about 2 weeks."
Personally, we still can't believe that that was it!!! It was so much easier and faster than we thought. Although, we believe it was that easy and fast because our lawyer has an intact reputation and almost 100% approval rate (http://www.perezlawyers.com/). We are very happy we hired him and we will definitely keep in touch for the renewal of the card in 2 years.

PS: I'll be back to let you know how fast did we received the green card in the mail! As usual, keep your fingers crossed!!! :)

PS2: I got a WELCOME letter from USCIS on 09/16/2011 and another one on 09/19/2011. My husband got an APPROVAL NOTICE letter on 09/20/2011 and my GREEN CARD arrived on 09/20/2011 (7 days after the interview!!!!! I don't know if that's some kind of record or if we were just a little LUCKY but all I know is that we are free from immigration paperwork for the next 2 years)

***I WISH ALL THE LUCK IN THE WORLD TO ALL THE COUPLES WHO ARE GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS AS WELL***

Marriage Based Green Card Interview

Our letter finally arrived!!! Finally!!!!! They scheduled our interview for mid september and even though we know NOTHING can go wrong (because we are in a very truthful relationship for almost 3 years now), we are still a little 'concearned' (for lack of a better word).
We will have a last appointment with our lawyer in about 3 weeks to get the documents 'check list' out of the way and get ready for the 'basic questions'.
Any suggestions? Should we be concerned with the intimacy of the questions? What to expect?
I know we will do just fine because our marriage is legit but even though, just knowing that someone is 'testing' your relationship is at least intimidating...
Some people told us it's not a big deal (5min and you're out), some people said: 'get ready because even the simplest questions NO ONE pays attention to (like what color of underwear is your husband/wife wearing today) can get you a denial'. Either way, there's no better time than the present so, let the testing begin!!!!

I'll be back with some very specific updates on the interview once we're done with it!

Keep your fingers crossed for us!!!! :)

Fingerprint's Appointment

Finally, we got a letter from immigration with the date and time for my fingerprint's appointment. I'm very excited because the process is developing faster than we expected. The appointment will be in three weeks so, keep your fingers crossed for us! I'll come back with updates once we get the letter following the appointment! :)

So, I had my Biometrics taken yesterday (07/27/2011). At first I was very nervous because I had no idea how simple it all is. My appointment was suppose to be at 3pm (in Elizabeth City NJ) but I thought if I got there earlier it could be something like 'first come first served' and I was right! I took the TRENTON train at NY Penn Station around noon (it's the 4th stop)  and I got there at 1:30pm (the office is 450f from the train station) and everyone was very nice to me.
My docs got checked by 3 people and I had to fill out another form, everything was done pretty smoothly and fast though. Obviously by that point I was far from nervous. They gave me a number and there were 16 people ahead of me in the waiting room but it only took 15min and my number was up. It takes about 5min for the Biometrics to be taken and that was it!
I don't know if it was because my bday is 3 days away or what but the staff was extremely nice and everyone wished me 'Happy Birthday'.
Now let's keep our fingers crossed so the letter with our interview date comes asap! I'll keep you posted! :)

Mixed-Faith Wedding (Catholic-Jewish) Update

We have had meetings with Father Gerald (from St. Raphaels) every weekend since April and we still haven't finished our 'Catholic Church Drama'. We were hoping last weekend Father Gerald would give us the paperwork we need but he said we still need a couple more meetings once he has one more form to be signed by the Bishop. Apparently he was NOT SATISFIED with the Pre-Cana we had with Peter McFadden and he decided to 'coach' another preparation himself. He has been giving us tests, quizzes, one on one chats and pretty much going all 9 yards with the Pre-Cana. I'm not complaining or anything (I'm glad he's been helping us), I just don't think it was necessary to put my Jewish husband through 2 Pre-Cana Courses.

PS: I'll be back soon with more updates on the Catholic Church matter and also on Immigration matters (we have another appointment with our lawyers this week)

PS2: All the detailed info about the Pre-Cana Course (phone #s, addresses, etc) you can find in my 'Mixed-Faith Wedding (Catholic-Jewish)' Post!

KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED FOR US :)

Hey there, Father Gerald called us this weekend (July 4th 2011) to schedule (what appears to be) our last Pre-Cana Class! I'll be back with the updates on that in a couple of weeks! :)

Hello there, we finally finished our Pre-Cana Prep at St. Raphael's this weekend (July 30th 2011) and Father Gerald was the best! He made everything very easy for us (even though we had to have intensive prep because my Husband is Jewish)!
So that's it for us with the Catholic Church, all the papers were already mailed (FINALLY) and we can start to worry only about the reception details and our interview at the USCIS Office.

Finally, a good Priest!

After 2 months running around NYC and North Jersey, we finally found a good soul willing to help us with the Catholic Church paperwork for our upcoming Religious Wedding Ceremony.
Thank you Father Gerald, for making our lives a whole lot easier!
Our second step will be to finish our Pre-Cana classes this month and take the results back to Father Gerald at St. Raphaels Church so we can go on with the ceremony and paperwork arrangements.
In the mean time we are still apartment hunting and taking care of all the other 'topics' related to our Wedding Reception abroad.
PS: I'll be back soon with more updates (hopefully good ones) regarding our Church paperwork and all the help we are getting from Father Gerald!

USCIS Doctor Results

So, I went to the Doctor's office yesterday to get the results of the tests immigration requires and all the paperwork they request from a licensed Doctor stating I'm healthy, I don't have any infectious disease and that my husband didn't marry me because I'm dying or anything like that. The good thing was that as my tests came out negative for everything they tested me, we are now free to start the next step of the Green Card Process. We just need to wait for the lawyers to receive the paperwork from the Doctor's office and then we will be ready to go. As far as we are concerned, that's it for immigration Doctor's visits for us!

PS: All the info, the phone numbers and locations from the Doctors we went you will find  in the "USCIS Doctor" post below! :)

Mixed-Faith Wedding (Catholic-Jewish)

I had NO idea what kind of trouble I was getting myself into when I fell in love with a Jewish man. Me, a 27 year old, born and raised Catholic girl who went to a Catholic School her whole life and never even met a Jewish person (until 2008, THANKS to a very special friend of mine lol)! Anyway, we thought Immigration was gonna be the problem. WE WERE SO WRONG!!! The Church is giving us such a hard time!!! Let's start from the beginning...
I was active in my religion until I got accepted in College, after that, I REALLY didn't have much time to go to the Church (full time classes + internship at a hospital). I SWEAR I didn't have time, I didn't even had time to study or even see my boyfriend at that time. Anyway, after that I only went (and still go) to Church on special occasions (weddings, communions, baptisms, Christmas) but I do celebrate all Catholic holidays. My husband on the other hand, was never active in his faith. No temples, no holidays, no nothing.
So, for that end, we have decided to get married at the Catholic Church. I thought it would be a lot easier after we've decided which religion to "follow". WRONG AGAIN!!!
I have researched every single Catholic Church web site, Archdiocese and Youth Centers in the Tristate area, I've been to nearly 15 Churches and spoke to about 20 Priests and secretaries and only 2 people were able to "kinda" help us.
We've been told we will need for the Catholic part:  Recent Baptism Certificate, Recent Confirmation Certificate, Letter Of Freedom from the Parish, Display Of Cult and Pre-Cana. For the Jewish Part, as he doesn't have either certificate, he'll need the Letter Of Freedom, the Display of Cult, the Pre-Cana AND an authorization from a Bishop to be able to get married in a Catholic Church.
Now, the problems we are having is only because as I don't attend to Church masses, I'm "technically" not considered in ANY parish. Apparently the Priest in charge of "my Parish" has the MORAL OBLIGATION to prepare my husband and I for our "upcoming marriage" and no one is willing to take us and help us with the paperwork. Which means we are still looking for a GOOD SOUL who will help us with the Catholic Church paperwork.
The Pre-Cana is a whole other story. Usually pretty expensive ($400-$600) and it's not very useful for people who are already in a long relationship (which is our case, almost 3 years). It can last from 1 to 15 days, it all depends if the Priest thinks you are ready to be married or not (worst case scenario, if he thinks you're not, sorry but you won't be getting married in a Catholic Church). These classes are pretty on demand and you need to start looking about a year before the "Big Day". We settled for the Pre-Cana from the "Church Of Our Savior" (on Park Av. we spoke with Peter McFadden (646) 341-0848 and it costs $250 for the classes only) and we will be starting our classes in april. even though we are very excited with the wedding prep and everything, we are still very worried about all the problems with the Church, we still have NO paperwork and NO ONE to help. I spoke with Father Joel (St. Patrick's Church) and Father George (St. James Church) but neither of them could "take" us as parish members and sent us to the Archdiocese. We were NOT well received there but I will try a second time this week and I also will try St. Raphael's Church, which is the last Church on my list, we've been to all others already.
Shouldn't they be happy my husband already agreed on having our future children baptized? Shouldn't they be happy he is putting his religion aside so I can have my dream wedding? Shouldn't they be happy we will raise our children Catholic? Shouldn't they be happy that even though he is Jewish, we still celebrate ALL Catholic holidays and NOT EVEN ONE Jewish? Maybe that's just me but, shouldn't they be JUST HAPPY FOR US? Hopefully, I'll come back with better news next week :(
PS: If you're getting married and you're also in a mixed-faith relationship, there are some very important DETAILS you should know. *Your partner does NOT need to be baptized. *There's NO need to convert. *You CANNOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE have both CATHOLIC & JEWISH ceremony at a church. You CAN however, have your wedding elsewhere and only then have BOTH a PRIEST and a RABI present to bless your union.  *Ask for the letters and authorizations I mentioned before and you should be fine to marry WHOEVER you want, WHEREVER you please.

USCIS Doctor

I called every single Doctor's office in NYC and North Jersey that are in the Immigration website list. I researched every clinic and I also called the Immigration Hot Line (1800-375-5283). Be very careful when choosing your physician. Most of them only want your money, they charge outrageous fees and the consultation couldn't be simpler. If you have had any kind of illness in your childhood or if you got any kind of immunization in your country, have it mailed to you! It will help you A LOT, not mentioning it'll cut the cost of your MD in half.
I had my mother mail me my vaccination card from when I was a kid and I also asked her to get with a doctor a 'prescription' saying I had Chicken Pox (Varicella, Catapora) as a child. Even though I had the Vaccination card with me, I still had to take "Booster Shots" (apparently, you have to re-take the shots every 10 years; I DID NOT KNOW THAT!)
Anyway, the consultation costs $150 (Dr. Girish Patel - Ronak Medical Care -765 Amsterdam Av., New York, NY) they wanted to charge me an additional $200 for the vaccines but I've been living in NYC long enough and I know better than that. I told them I would take the vaccines at the NYC Health Clinic (303 W 9th Ave. Corner with 28th St.) because they don't charge for any immunization there, the secretary said it was fine as long as I show them my vaccination card with they "Booster Shots" when I go back to get my results and paperwork in 4 days.
NO problems there, I left the office (Train 2 both ways from Penn Station is express and takes less than 10 minutes. Get off at 96th St. for the Doctor's office) after taking the blood tests and the check up and went straight to the clinic in Chelsea where it took them less than 15 minutes to give me the shots, sign my card and let me know I need to go back in 28 days to get the 2nd dose of one of the vaccines. Which means I just saved $200 (It might sounds cheap but you'll understand if you are a former Au Pair! lol).
PS: The staff at the Doctor's office was super nice and they won't try to give you something you don't need just to take your money. They were very professional and didn't have any problems with the fact that I wanted to go to the City Clinic for the Vaccines. It's all for now MD wise, I'll be back with the results next week :)

1st Things 1st

So, I've decided to start this blog after I realized how much work the Green Card process requires.
I wanna give the help I never had to all the Brides to be in the Tristate area.
I've been told "you can do it on your own", "lawyers only want your money", "it's not a big deal", "it's so easy, just fill out the paperwork and mail it", and many more... Well, it turns out, these people are OH SO WRONG!!! I DO NEED A LAWYER!!! It's so overwhelming, confusing and stressful that I'm working very hard to stay sane and that's because I have full support from my lawyer and my husband.
It's NOT just "fill in the blanks and mail it" it's way more than that.
I have been researching online and running around the city trying to get all my docs in order and then give them to my lawyer so he can start my process with immigration.
Enough about me, let's start. I had my 1st appointment with my lawyer (Which BTW has a 99.8% approval rate by Immigration and it's not as expensive as I expected) about a week ago. He asked me to get all the paperwork together and once we have it all, we should set up a second appointment so he would fill it all out with us and check if we have everything we need or if anything is missing. The paperwork for now pretty much consists in: bank statements (mine and my husband's), doctor's forms (vaccinations, blood test and check up), passport, DS2019, I-94, I-20 and whatever you and your husband have in common that are proof that you live together (health plan, costco card, joint accounts, utilities, rent...). After all that is done, we can go back to the lawyer's office (http://www.perezlawyers.com/) for the follow up.
